About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Train new graduate coders to code facility ancillary, ER, ambulatory surgery and inpatient accounts
  • Audit accounts coded by coding trainees
  • Evaluate coding trainee progress and proficiency
  • Determine trainee readiness to code each level and recommend advancement
  • Evaluate new student graduates for the coding program
  • Prepare coders for CCS, CPC, CRC and/or specialty certification exams
  • Assist in developing curriculum and training programs for in-person and virtual classroom settings
  • Utilize HealthStream, MedLearn and other available educational software
  • Maintain continuous education to stay current on coding regulations and requirements
  • Work with HIM management to design curriculum and teach coding guidelines and rules
  • Report to the Health Information Manager
  • Prepare and give performance evaluations
  • Work with other healthcare professionals and staff

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • High School Diploma or GED required
  • Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) required for facility coding
  • Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA), Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) or Certified Risk Adjustment Coder (CRC) preferred
  • 5 to 7 years related experience
  • 5-7 years coding experience
  • Experience coding all facility type accounts
  • Minimum score of 85% on pre-employment coding test
  • Ability to train coders remotely
  • Ability to utilize related software and computer/PC skills
  • Advanced knowledge of coding
  • Excellent interpersonal, written and oral skills
  • Ability to analyze data and produce reports using MS Office
  • Demonstrated expertise in all types of coding
  • Knowledge of National Correct Coding Initiative (NCCI)
  • EPIC and Optum experience preferred
  • Training experience preferred
