About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Assist with assessment, planning, implementation, evaluation, and documentation of patient care
  • Facilitate the safe and effective conduct of invasive and non-invasive surgical procedures
  • Maintain a safe operating room environment and ensure equipment functions properly
  • Account accurately for items used during procedures and maintain an organized sterile field
  • Apply principles of asepsis and sterile technique, anatomy, surgical procedures, tools, and technologies
  • Participate in safety measures and maintain awareness of required supplies
  • Prepare the surgical environment, ensuring supplies and devices are sterile and ready
  • Clip, transport, position, and ensure aseptic incision sites for patients
  • Assist with patient preparation before procedures
  • Make minor adjustments to avoid instrument malfunctions and keep instruments operational
  • Conduct sterile and unsterile supply quality assurance checks according to sterilization principles
  • Verify completeness of items returned from the surgical site
  • Participate in reconciliation activities
  • Provide services for patients during surgical procedures
  • Perform additional administrative duties as needed for case preparation
  • Perform LPN duties within scope of practice when holding an LPN license

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Graduate of an approved school of surgical technology or graduate of an accredited school of practical nursing as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) required
  • Experience in an operating room setting preferred
  • Knowledge of anatomy, physiology, medical and surgical terminology, instrumentation, aseptic techniques, and surgical procedures acquired through post-secondary training
  • National certification as a Surgical Technologist preferred
  • If an LPN, currently hold an unencumbered Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) license with State Nursing board and/or possess multi-state licensure privileges
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) required within first 60 days of employment
  • Complete required annual continuing education units (CEU) and competency training requirements
  • Obtain and maintain required department-specific competencies and certifications
  • If working in North Dakota and not an LPN, be on the North Dakota Board of Nursing Unlicensed Assistive Personnel (UAP) Registry at the time employment begins
  • Ability to demonstrate positive interpersonal relationships and well-developed critical thinking skills
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and adjust to changes in duties with minimal notice
