About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Perform piping engineering and analysis evaluations in accordance with ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, ASME B31.1, ASME B31.7, and other applicable codes
- Perform vibration monitoring and analysis for plant modifications and operating events
- Provide vibration prevention and mitigation solutions and designs
- Evaluate hydraulic transients and thermal stratification effects
- Perform operability evaluations and qualify piping for hydrodynamic loads
- Perform pipe rupture evaluations, pipe wall thinning evaluations due to FAC or MIC, and pipe flaw evaluations
- Provide senior-level technical direction and supervision to project team members
- Establish project task schedules and budgets for the discipline
- Coordinate activities between disciplines
- Ensure successful completion of project deliverables meeting technical, quality, and project controls expectations
- Serve as technical liaison with clients and lead technical resource on projects
- Review complex calculations and approve simple calculations
- Provide technical guidance to project team members
- Review and approve simple system/structural designs and prepare and review complex designs
- Perform engineering review of drawings and review design inputs
- Define client expectations for drawings and coordinate design-engineering interfaces
- Participate in design reviews to ensure quality, constructability, and operability
- Prepare and review system, installation, and material specifications
- Define technical and commercial requirements, including vendor-submittal schedules
- Prepare bid evaluations and participate in vendor bid negotiations
- Evaluate client change orders when applicable
- Prepare and review complex single-discipline reports/studies and participate in multidisciplinary reports
- Review studies and reports for technical soundness, cost-effectiveness, and clear communication
Requirements
What you’ll need- BS or MS in Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Mechanics, Aerospace, or Structural/Civil Engineering, from an ABET Engineering Accreditation Commission-approved program
- Emphasis in solid mechanics, structural analysis, theory of elasticity, metallurgy, and finite element analysis
- 10 or more years of relevant experience
- Extensive knowledge of ASME B31.1 and ASME B&PV Section III piping codes
- Knowledge of the design, selection, and application of pipe supporting elements
- Working knowledge of commercially available piping products and their application
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Must be authorized to work in the U.S.; Sargent & Lundy does not sponsor employees for work authorization in the U.S.
- P.E. license is valued but not required
- Ability to navigate a 3D CAD model is valued but not required
- Experience with AutoPIPE or PIPESTRESS software is valued but not required
- Knowledge of gas dynamics and hydraulic transients is valued but not required
- Knowledge of pipe condition assessment is valued but not required
- Experience with ANSYS Workbench and Mechanical ADP is valued but not required
