About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Lead an engineering and design team on substation modifications and upgrades
  • Create calculations, document designs, and prepare specifications for client requirements and reviews
  • Prepare relaying philosophies and select relay, control, and communications equipment
  • Develop SCADA and telecommunications concepts and configurations
  • Oversee I/O assignments and connection diagrams
  • Guide engineers and designers through protection and controls engineering design efforts
  • Coordinate detailed design phases across engineering work
  • Investigate, troubleshoot, and solve engineering issues
  • Analyze and design single-line, A.C. schematic, and D.C. schematic diagrams
  • Prepare engineering studies for client and peer review
  • Independently review calculations and drawings prepared by others
  • Coordinate with engineers, project managers, clients, and suppliers for complete and timely designs
  • Review existing facilities and recommend upgrades and replacements
  • Present findings and recommendations to clients and peers
  • Participate in peer learning and knowledge-sharing Communities of Practice
  • Mentor less experienced engineers
  • Potentially travel to client and vendor offices for design reviews and plant sites for construction coordination and field verification

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Bachelor of Science Engineering degree required
  • 10 or more years of experience focused on protection, control, and telecommunications for high-voltage substations, including design, installation, and coordination
  • PE license
  • Experience serving as a firm/client liaison in a support or lead engineering role
  • Experience writing and supporting documentation for relay calculations
  • Experience with design techniques, tools, and principles for technical plans, blueprints, drawings, and models
  • Proficiency with SKM, ETAP, ASPEN, CDEGS, or vendor software
  • Familiarity with NEC, NESC, NEMA, IEEE, and ANSI codes and standards
  • Experience with protective relay equipment from vendors including SEL, ABB, GE, Areva, and Basler
  • Proficiency with MS Office applications
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Must not require employer sponsorship for work authorization in the U.S.
  • Bachelor of Science Electrical Engineering degree preferred
  • Degree from an ABET-accredited engineering program preferred
  • Experience with in-line, bus, and equipment protection; breaker, transformer, and similar equipment control; RTU and data-concentrator SCADA systems; telemetering and communications
  • AutoCAD or MicroStation experience valued
  • Construction and start-up experience valued
  • Testing or commissioning experience valued
