About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Apply knowledge of materials, structural analysis, structural steel design, and reinforced concrete design
  • Work as part of an engineering and design team on power transmission modifications and upgrades
  • Create calculations, document designs, and prepare specifications
  • Investigate, troubleshoot, and solve structural engineering issues
  • Perform structural analysis and detailed design of steel frames, connections, concrete members, equipment, and foundations
  • Develop integrated structural designs and supporting calculations
  • Interface directly with clients and communicate technical information
  • Prepare technical specifications for structural materials
  • Independently review others’ calculations and drawing preparation
  • Coordinate and guide engineers, project managers, client personnel, and suppliers
  • Review existing facilities and propose upgrades and replacements
  • Present findings and recommendations to clients and peers
  • Participate in peer learning through S&L systems and Communities of Practice
  • Travel to client and vendor offices for design reviews and to substations for construction coordination and field verification

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • BSCE or MSCE from an ABET Engineering Accreditation Commission-approved program
  • Strong academic background in behavior of materials, structural analysis, structural steel design, and reinforced concrete design
  • Three or more years of experience as a practicing structural engineer, preferably on electrical substation design and upgrade projects
  • Ability to communicate effectively with clients using appropriate technical detail
  • Ability to perform occasional walk-downs and visit client sites for scoping meetings
  • Experience writing and providing supporting documentation for structural engineering calculations
  • Ability to complete assignments within budget and schedule with a high degree of accuracy
  • Technical knowledge of structural engineering applications, including analysis for structural supports, loads, and design integrity
  • Experience with design techniques, tools, and principles for technical plans, blueprints, drawings, and models
  • Proficiency with any of: MathCad, STAAD PRO, SAP2000, SAFE, RISA 3D, and RISA Floor
  • Familiarity with IBC, ASCE 7, AISC, and ACI 318
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Must be authorized to work in the U.S.; the employer does not sponsor work authorization
  • PE license valued but not required
  • Experience in light industrial building structure design valued but not required
