About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Manage safe and efficient Defense Waste Processing Facility operations on the assigned day shift
  • Direct all aspects of DWPF operations while on duty, providing work direction and making decisions affecting work objectives and activities
  • Promote and ensure employee safety and nuclear safety culture, including encouraging workers to raise safety concerns
  • Manage operations personnel and ensure work is performed efficiently and according to policies and procedures
  • Ensure facility operation complies with operational safety, process, environmental, plant operating, security, quality assurance and personnel requirements
  • Ensure minimum staffing requirements and exercise authority to shut down operations or direct actions when necessary for safety and compliance
  • Set and enforce conduct-of-operations standards
  • Develop plans and path-forward actions for failed equipment or changing conditions
  • Schedule, complete and track surveillance requirements
  • Authorize work and plant configuration changes, including equipment removal or return to service and abnormal lineups
  • Authorize installation of equipment lockouts and ensure qualified operations personnel install them
  • Tour the plant at least once per shift to troubleshoot, set operator expectations, check evolutions and inspect plant conditions
  • Perform training, personnel development and performance assessment administrative functions
  • Provide matrix leadership for Maintenance, E&I, Work Control, Laboratory, Construction, QA, IH, Technical and HP personnel
  • Make independent decisions regarding emergency actions and routine occurrences
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Bachelor's degree in a related technical discipline with experience in a relevant engineering, operations or maintenance function; or Associates of Science or Associates of Applied Science degree or non-technical Bachelor’s degree with experience in a relevant engineering, operations and/or maintenance; or High School Diploma or GED with relevant experience in engineering, operations and/or maintenance function
  • Experience working in a nuclear facility
  • Facility qualification process including extensive classroom, formal on-the-job training, and oral board examination conducted by facility management must be completed within one year
  • 6+ years nuclear experience (preferred)
  • Current or previously held DWPF Shift Operations Manager qualifications (preferred)
  • Current or previously qualified as Control Room Manager within the hiring facility (preferred)
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or Science (preferred)
  • Previous supervisory experience (preferred)
  • Current qualification as a Control Room Operator, First Line Manager or Shift Technical Engineer within the hiring facility is credited as one additional year of experience
  • Deviations to Education and Experience Requirements must follow requirements of DOE Order 426.2
