About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Provide policy and technical support for public policy, advocacy, and government relations work related to the U.S. foreign assistance budget and appropriations
  • Analyze policy and track legislative developments on Capitol Hill
  • Develop and maintain strategic relationships with relevant congressional offices
  • Coordinate and implement advocacy to Congress and the administration on foreign assistance funding
  • Advocate for priority humanitarian and development assistance funding lines
  • Represent Save the Children’s policy priorities in advocacy coalitions and meetings with Congressional offices and Administration officials
  • Develop fact sheets, policy statements, outside witness testimony, talking points, and other advocacy materials
  • Coordinate with the Domestic Policy Team on appropriations advocacy
  • Plan and execute advocacy events as needed
  • Contribute to the broader congressional relations strategy and general knowledge of political developments
  • Contribute to biweekly policy updates
  • Track and communicate hearings, briefings, mark-ups, and other legislative developments
  • Serve as a budget and appropriations resource for other departments and divisions
  • Perform other duties as necessary

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Minimum of a High School Diploma or equivalent
  • At least 3 years of relevant experience
  • Successful work experience in a Congressional office, NGO, think-tank, or Executive Branch position focused on congressional relations and/or advocacy
  • Strong understanding of the appropriations process on Capitol Hill
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully deliver multiple projects and assignments with competing priorities and deadlines
  • Ability to work independently on assigned tasks with direction, using informed time management and problem-solving
  • Professional proficiency in MS Office suite
  • Professional proficiency in spoken and written English, including policy-oriented writing, research, and analytical skills
  • May be required to operate a motor vehicle; should maintain a valid driver’s license and comply with vehicle-safety policies
  • Preferred: experience working in a large, complex matrixed organization
  • Preferred: professional experience focused on federal budget and appropriations
  • Preferred: professional experience focused on international development issues
  • Preferred: experience working in coalitions and networks
