About the role

Key responsibilities & impact

Ship a meaningful AI-related feature alongside the team during the first month
Make the engineering team faster by improving tooling, review, testing, work allocation, and development processes
Pair with and conduct technical 1:1s with engineers
Take over technical interviews and build an interview process that runs independently
Design technical challenges, run screens, and make hiring decisions
Own technical decisions, specifications, architecture, and reviews for major projects
Ship weekly and lead the team's largest technical work
Improve testing, automation, code review, and security review practices
Maintain the zero-bug policy and accountability for bug resolution
Mentor engineers and support technical growth
Progress into people management, including 1:1s and growth conversations, as the team grows
Refine software development processes and optimise cycle time from specification to production
Work directly with the co-founder and CTO
Build AI capabilities including agentic workflows, intelligent evidence collection, and context-aware policy generation for Secfix's security compliance platform

Requirements

What you’ll need

8+ years as a software engineer at senior or staff level
1+ years as a tech lead (formal or de facto) for a team of 3+
Shipped AI features to production, including retrieval, RAG, or agentic workflows
Built and shipped with Claude Code and Cursor in real production work
Ability to lead system design, write specifications, own architecture, and drive projects to production
Strong OOP fundamentals; Java Spring Boot, Hibernate, or equivalent
Relational database design and SQL optimisation
Experience interviewing engineering candidates
Built something zero to one at a startup or scaled a team through the messy middle
Able to work in the European timezone (CET/CEST)
EMEA-based, ideally Germany or UK
Product taste and high quality standards
Hands-on AI-assisted development experience
Startup experience
Proactive written communication
Based in EMEA and able to come to Germany every 6–8 weeks
Nice to have: people management and technical interviewing experience
Nice to have: designed a technical interview process from scratch
Nice to have: previous experience at a fully remote company
