About the role

Key responsibilities & impact

Provide technical direction across two engineering teams and connected domains
Design scalable frontend and backend solutions across the Transaction domain
Facilitate architectural decisions and make data-driven trade-offs involving performance, security, reliability, maintainability and cost
Identify risks extending beyond an individual team
Remain hands-on across frontend and backend using React and TypeScript
Contribute to backend services and APIs
Shape customer-facing experiences from discovery and system design through implementation and production
Help establish foundations for future native iOS and Android checkout experiences
Drive adoption of architecture, performance, security, testing, observability and reliability practices
Create reusable patterns, guidelines and platform capabilities for recurring technical challenges
Align Checkout, Payments, Orders, Shipping and dependent teams
Mentor engineers and facilitate architecture and design discussions
Provide technical direction without relying on formal authority
Partner with Product, UX and engineering leadership to translate business needs into technical strategy
Use data, metrics and industry trends to evaluate trade-offs and prioritize high-impact investments

Requirements

What you’ll need

Deep, hands-on frontend engineering expertise with React and TypeScript
Professional backend development experience in at least one language or framework, such as Node.js, Java, Python or similar
Experience working across the stack and contributing to production backend services and APIs
Staff/Principal-level experience or equivalent technical scope
Experience designing complex systems and driving architectural decisions affecting multiple teams or domains
Strong record of leading through influence and growing other engineers
Ability to mentor experienced engineers and facilitate architecture and design discussions
Experience introducing engineering standards and enabling teams to make high-quality technical decisions independently
Strong business and product judgment
Ability to work effectively with Product, UX, Security, SRE and engineering stakeholders
Ability to use metrics and evidence to guide decisions
Experience with checkout, payments, orders, e-commerce or marketplace systems is a strong plus
Exposure to native Android/Kotlin or iOS/Swift development is valuable
