About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Evaluate materials for aerospace and defense applications
- Conduct detailed material risk assessments
- Create and maintain hazardous material databases
- Collaborate with design engineers to optimize material selection
- Provide technical guidance on hazardous material properties and performance
- Apply systematic and logical problem-solving techniques to select materials and processes
- Convey technical information, design specifications, and project updates to team members, stakeholders, and management
- Work collaboratively with cross-functional and multidisciplinary teams
- Support the SAOC mission to modernize and deliver next-generation aircraft for the U.S. Air Force
Requirements
What you’ll need- Bachelor’s degree in Material Science, Chemical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related field
- 2+ years of experience in material science or a related role
- Higher level relevant degree may substitute for experience
- Proficient understanding of material properties
- General understanding of local, state, or federal hazardous materials regulations
- Exposure to working in multi-disciplinary design & development teams
- Ability to obtain and maintain a Secret U.S. Security Clearance
- U.S. Citizenship status is required
- Preferred: Master’s degree in a related field
- Preferred experience with spectroscopy, mechanical and thermal testing equipment and associated software
- Familiarity with FAA, NASA, and/or DoD material and process guidance and regulations
- Knowledge of MMPDS, CHM-17, AGATE, NCAMP, and MAPTIS materials allowable databases
- Knowledge of environmental requirements for aircraft and space materials
- Experience providing technical guidance on materials and process engineering
- Background in the aerospace and defense industry, U.S. Department of Defense and/or U.S. military
- Experience creating qualitative or quantitative System Safety analyses
- Experience applying MIL-STD-882
- Experience writing and implementing policy
- Ability to work on a computer for extended periods
- Occasional travel may be required
- Ability to work in an office or hybrid environment
- Ability to understand technical documents, designs, and test reports
