About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Set the technical direction for building, running and operating Slate's infrastructure
- Architect and build a hybrid Kubernetes platform across Amazon EKS and self-managed clusters on virtualized infrastructure
- Own the reference architecture for cluster provisioning, multi-cluster management, networking, identity, secrets, storage and upgrades
- Evolve the multi-account AWS environment, including governance, guardrails, IAM, networking and DNS connecting cloud sites
- Decide where workloads live and how they connect
- Establish on-call rotation, SLOs, error budgets, alerting standards, incident response and blameless postmortems
- Build observability across metrics, logs, traces and synthetic checks
- Partner with Digital, Data Engineering, Manufacturing Systems and enterprise application teams
- Provide CI/CD templates, deployment patterns, reusable infrastructure libraries and self-service environments
- Shape platform support for manufacturing, plant-floor workloads, data pipelines and AI/agentic workloads
- Implement least-privilege access, policy guardrails, secrets management and software supply chain controls
- Manage cloud cost visibility and discipline through tagging, right-sizing and commitment planning
- Write production infrastructure and code weekly
- Lead design reviews, mentor engineers and create documentation and runbooks
- Participate in the on-call rotation
Requirements
What you’ll need- 10+ years in DevOps, site reliability, platform or infrastructure engineering, including several years setting technical direction for production platforms
- Extensive hands-on experience designing and operating production AWS environments across many accounts, including multi-account governance, identity and access management, VPC networking and hybrid connectivity, DNS, EKS, containers, serverless and managed data services
- Proven experience running Kubernetes in production on EKS and self-managed clusters built on VMs or bare metal, including cluster lifecycle, CNI networking, ingress, storage, RBAC and upgrades
- Strong experience with infrastructure as code; AWS CDK strongly preferred
- Strong Python skills required
- Ability to read, understand and make targeted changes to TypeScript
- Experience building delivery pipelines with GitHub Actions or similar tools
- Experience deploying to Kubernetes with GitOps tooling such as Argo CD or Flux, Helm and Kustomize
- Track record of establishing SLOs, observability, incident management and on-call practices, and participating in on-call
- Solid grasp of networking across cloud and on-premises environments, including routing, VPN, DNS, load balancing, certificates and firewalls
- Ability to drive architectural decisions across teams without direct authority, write clear design documents and align stakeholders
- Comfort in a fast-moving, resource-constrained startup environment
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering or a related field, or equivalent practical experience
- Applicants must be authorized to work in the United States on a permanent basis
- AWS Professional or Specialty certification is a plus
- Experience with Rancher or a comparable multi-cluster management platform is a strong plus
- Exposure to manufacturing, industrial or OT environments is nice to have
- Experience running GPU, machine learning or AI and agentic workloads on Kubernetes is nice to have
- Familiarity with enterprise virtualization platforms such as VMware is nice to have
- Policy as code, service mesh or GitHub Enterprise administration experience is nice to have
