About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Own the backend of the Smeetz MCP server and AI chatbot end to end, including services, tool surface, agent logic, and guardrails
- Design and build APIs and integrations connecting the AI surfaces to the Smeetz platform for ticketing, bookings, and payments
- Ensure production-grade security, performance, and reliability
- Own reliability and performance metrics including latency, error rates, cost per call, and client call patterns
- Use Langfuse observability data to identify and address issues
- Build the evaluation layer so prompt and model changes are measured before release
- Participate in on-call for owned services
- Work with the product owner and venue-facing teams to understand operator usage and turn it into technical specifications and priorities
- Analyze traces and usage data to identify failures or gaps and propose future work
- Define success metrics and report on shipped outcomes
- Document owned surfaces and extend the shared Claude Code skill library
- Report to the VP of Engineering; no direct reports
Requirements
What you’ll need- 5+ years shipping production code, including 3+ years of backend engineering building and running production APIs
- Node.js/TypeScript is strongly preferred
- Solid backend fundamentals, including API design, data modelling, authentication and permissions, queues and async processing, and debugging under production load
- Shipped at least one LLM-based feature to real users and worked on its backend side, including tool calling, structured outputs, cost and latency control, and production failure modes
- Ownership of a production system, including on-call responsibilities
- Daily use of Claude Code or an equivalent agentic environment beyond autocomplete
- Comfortable talking to non-technical stakeholders and turning their problems into technical work
- Fluent English
- Nice to have: designing tool or API surfaces for agents
- Nice to have: MCP specification knowledge beyond client usage
- Nice to have: Anthropic Claude API and tool use
- Nice to have: Langfuse or similar tools such as LangSmith, Braintrust, or Phoenix
- Nice to have: evals and retrieval over a support knowledge base; Intercom Fin experience is relevant
- Nice to have: agent guardrails with write access, including permissions, confirmation steps, prompt injection, and PII
- Nice to have: product-engineering experience shaping priorities
- French or German is nice to have
- Personal attributes: owner, backend-first and product-aware, AI-native, measured, and writer
