About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Service, maintain and repair Volvo Construction Equipment and associated machinery
  • Diagnose and resolve mechanical, hydraulic and electrical faults using technical expertise and diagnostic equipment
  • Identify additional service and repair opportunities and discuss them with customers and internal teams
  • Carry out work in line with quotations and time guides, highlighting additional work where required
  • Install software updates and system enhancements
  • Complete electronic job cards, reports and timesheets accurately and in real time
  • Order and manage repair parts and return parts promptly upon job completion
  • Support call-out and overtime requirements
  • Attend product and systems training
  • Complete all work safely and according to company and manufacturer standards
  • Deliver first-class service to internal and external customers
  • Maximise machine uptime and promote SMT GB aftermarket products and services where appropriate
  • Work independently while representing SMT GB professionally on customer sites

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Formal engineering qualification in Plant Maintenance, Agricultural Engineering, HGV Mechanics or a related discipline (NVQ Level 3, City & Guilds or equivalent)
  • Proven experience repairing and maintaining heavy construction plant, agricultural machinery, HGVs or similar equipment
  • Strong diagnostic and fault-finding skills across diesel engines, transmissions, drivetrains, hydraulics and electrical systems
  • Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, wiring diagrams and service information
  • Experience using diagnostic tools and electronic service systems
  • Excellent problem-solving abilities and a methodical approach to fault diagnosis
  • Good communication skills and ability to build positive relationships with customers and colleagues
  • Strong IT skills and confidence using digital reporting systems and mobile technology
  • Commercially aware mindset focused on customer service and identifying further support opportunities
  • Ability to manage workload effectively, prioritise jobs and respond to changing customer requirements
  • Commitment to health, safety and environmental compliance
  • High attention to detail and professional approach
  • Positive, flexible attitude and willingness to participate in overtime and call-out activities
  • Full UK driving licence
  • Welding and fabrication experience (desirable)
  • Previous experience working with Volvo Construction Equipment or similar heavy plant machinery (desirable)
  • Experience in a field-based service environment (desirable)
  • Familiarity with telematics systems and modern machine technology (desirable)
  • Relevant health and safety qualifications such as IOSH Working Safely (desirable)
  • LGV/HGV, plant operator or lifting-related qualifications (desirable)
