Key responsibilities & impact
  • Lead Snap’s legal strategy for global music licensing and related music partnerships
  • Negotiate and renew complex agreements with labels, publishers, CMOs, PROs, and other rights holders
  • Advise Music Partnerships and senior leaders on deal strategy and high-stakes commercial terms
  • Counsel Product, Engineering, and cross-functional teams on music rights, contractual restrictions, copyright requirements, and operational controls
  • Advise on generative AI and evolving technology issues involving music copyright law
  • Develop copyright compliance and risk-mitigation approaches across products and services
  • Manage disputes, regulatory inquiries, litigation threats, and escalations involving music rights
  • Translate changing legal frameworks into practical guidance for business teams across regions
  • Develop junior lawyers and oversee outside counsel
  • Identify opportunities to expand or optimize music rights, product capabilities, and commercial offerings
  • Handle content, creator, and media partnership agreements and other commercial legal projects
  • Contribute to broader Commercial Legal and company initiatives
  • Advise business and product leaders on commercial transactions, policies, strategy, legal issues, and risks
  • Create and improve agreements, templates, and policies for new products and markets
  • Collaborate with colleagues across the company and occasionally with outside counsel

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • J.D. degree from an accredited law school
  • Active membership in a United States state bar, or qualification to be registered in-house counsel under California’s multi-jurisdictional practice program
  • 8+ years of relevant legal experience
  • Significant experience at a media or technology company, entertainment company, music business, or law firm with a sophisticated music, copyright, media, or digital-transactions practice
  • Significant experience negotiating complex music licensing or publishing agreements
  • Deep expertise in music licensing and publishing, including sound recording, musical composition, performance, synchronization, mechanical, neighboring, and other relevant rights
  • Strong understanding of copyright law and digital-platform music issues
  • Meaningful experience with emerging technology, generative AI, platform compliance, content moderation, rights-management systems, or novel product and copyright issues
  • Excellent legal and business judgment
  • Strong negotiation, drafting, analytical, written, and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to operate autonomously and manage multiple complex matters and deadlines
  • Ability to distill complex legal concepts into concise, actionable guidance
  • Ability to lead cross-functional projects and collaborate across Legal and the broader company
  • Ability to accommodate tight deadlines in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to use AI resources to drive accuracy and efficiency
  • Preferred: 5+ years of in-house experience
  • Preferred: Experience advising on generative AI, music technology, content operations, rights-management systems, or music product launches
  • Preferred: Experience managing high-value transactions and global outside counsel
  • Preferred: Experience leading or mentoring a legal team
