About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Ensure payroll processes and related transactions are executed timely and accurately
  • Oversee a team responsible for routine payroll runs and off-cycle requests
  • Ensure compliance with rules, regulations, company policies, internal controls, SOX, and regulatory guidance
  • Manage payroll compliance functions for a large multi-state and multi-country shared services payroll department
  • Organize and oversee planning and execution of payroll compliance functions and related services
  • Manage relationships with payroll providers and other outsourcers
  • Collaborate with Finance, Benefits, HR, IT, and other departments
  • Navigate the payroll compliance team through unexpected circumstances and instability
  • Implement continuous strategic process improvements to improve quality, efficiency, accuracy, and risk controls
  • Direct and evaluate payroll team activities involving reconciliations, employer/employee taxes, payroll control records, and year-end employee statements
  • Oversee and approve payroll general ledger integration and related activity
  • Review system testing and provide final sign-off on configuration and integration updates impacting payroll compliance
  • Maintain payroll standard operating procedures and oversee adherence to policies, procedures, and internal controls
  • Measure individual and team performance against operational metrics, SLAs, project timelines, training documentation, attendance, role knowledge, and development goals
  • Oversee payroll accounting journal entries and reconciliations
  • Serve as payroll contact for internal, external, and government audits
  • Maintain data integrity and confidentiality in Workday while adhering to privacy and security policies

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Bachelor’s degree required; degree in accounting, finance or related business preferred
  • Eight or more years of experience in Payroll, Accounting, Business, Finance, Labor Relations, Process Improvement or related field
  • Experience in payroll for a large multi-state company as a manager or other leadership role
  • Proficient understanding of payroll processes, controls, financial compliance, and regulations
  • Experience managing third party vendors, preferably in a shared services environment
  • Experience with payroll applications and service providers (e.g. ADP) is preferred
  • Proficient in Workday, with a strong understanding of capabilities and functionality
  • Knowledge of Workday reporting tools to generate payroll reports and analyze data for auditing and/or compliance purposes
  • Skilled in troubleshooting and resolving payroll-related issues in Workday, such as payroll errors, tax discrepancies, and wage garnishments
  • Stay up-to-date with the latest Workday releases and updates
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to work under pressure, multi-task, and meet deadlines
  • Ability to influence others, identify problems, and recommend a course of action
  • Experience in improving payroll processes to maximize efficiency and deliver quality services
  • Ability to process complex information and identify innovative solutions
  • Comfortable handling ambiguity and fluid situations
  • Experience providing independent technical guidance and counsel to key stakeholders
  • Established project management skills
  • Knowledge of accounting principles and finance concepts
  • Good with Excel, Word, and PowerPoint
  • Ability to work independently by leading, guiding, and/or coordinating others within a defined budget
