About the role

Key responsibilities & impact

Design and build core data-path components for request handling and storage
Implement and evolve Apache Kafka wire-protocol handling, including parsing, framing, versioning, and backward compatibility
Build and harden storage engines covering offset and sequence coordination, compaction, retention, and concurrent-access correctness
Diagnose races, consistency edge cases, and security or robustness issues under concurrent load
Profile and tune throughput and latency against measured production numbers
Own pieces of the data path end to end in Rust
Work with the open-source community on Nisshi through reviews, discussions, and contributions
Develop Solace Diskless Streaming for Apache Kafka, separating compute from storage and using object storage

Requirements

What you’ll need

Deep hands-on experience building a high-throughput, log-based streaming or messaging system such as Apache Kafka or a comparable platform, including wire protocols, client/server compatibility, and data-loss prevention
OR deep experience with database internals, including storage engines, write-ahead logs or commit logs, replication and consensus, or query execution
Strong systems-programming fundamentals in Rust, C++, Go, or Java
Track record of owning complex technical problems end to end, from design through production
Comfort working remotely and asynchronously across time zones
Preferred: production experience in Rust
Preferred: working knowledge of the Apache Kafka protocol, client libraries, and ecosystem
Preferred: hands-on experience with Apache Kafka, Redpanda, Pulsar, WarpStream, NATS JetStream, or Solace Event Broker internals
Preferred: experience running one of these systems at production scale
Preferred: experience with security hardening, fuzzing, or performance engineering of network services
