About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Own the first-pass preliminary transmission line and gen-tie design approach for assigned pursuits and projects
- Review project documents and technical requirements to define design basis, assumptions, routing, point-of-interconnection requirements, configurations, quantities, risks, and open items for 10% design deliverables
- Serve as the primary transmission line subject matter expert and coordinate inputs from engineering, survey, geotechnical, environmental, permitting, land, substation, procurement, estimating, scheduling, utility, and subcontractor teams
- Lead development of 10% transmission line designs, including routing, conductor sizing, and structure sizing
- Coordinate preliminary design, scope, schedule, risk, technical assumptions, estimates, and commercial assumptions with estimating and scheduling
- Review estimates for technical completeness and identify gaps, exclusions, allowances, contingencies, uncertainties, and clarification items
- Deliver owner-reviewed preliminary transmission line designs to estimating and business development according to stage-gate schedules
- Participate in client meetings and explain design assumptions, risks, routes, points of interconnection, utility requirements, and non-standard requirements
- Support contractual exhibit reviews, markups, and technical responses for LNTP
- Prepare and issue proposal requests to transmission line EORs and engineering subcontractors
- Review and align EOR and subcontractor proposals with project scope, assumptions, estimates, schedules, and LNTP requirements
- Prepare engineering scope, proposal information, schedule inputs, coordination details, risks, and open items for handoff to Preconstruction Engineering
- Support handoff to the HV engineering team by transferring RFIs, comments, design risks, procurement constraints, required decisions, and unresolved technical items
- Review and approve preliminary transmission line design deliverables for compliance with applicable standards and requirements
- Propose cost-effective, reliable, and constructible alternatives for routes, conductors, shield wire, structures, foundations, crossings, access, and interconnection interfaces
- Maintain documentation of route evaluations, design iterations, decisions, comments, proposals, assumptions, risks, and handoff materials
- Identify recurring issues and recommend process and standards improvements
- Assign and coordinate work for designers, engineers, interns, and technical support staff; review work for quality, completeness, and schedule compliance
- Mentor junior team members and identify training and development needs
