About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Maintain, upgrade, and optimize control and automation systems for Sonoco’s Industrial Products Division
  • Act as project lead for automation and control projects
  • Work with engineering, operations management, maintenance personnel, and contractors to meet project scope, budget, and schedule requirements
  • Create documentation packages for bidding, installation, start-up, and maintenance of control system projects
  • Provide commissioning and startup support for controls projects
  • Develop and maintain a project funnel for automation and control system upgrades
  • Work with plant process engineers to optimize control system performance
  • Provide direction to the maintenance team on controls-related work orders
  • Train the maintenance team on new and existing automation and control systems
  • Troubleshoot alongside the maintenance team during system upsets
  • Provide strategic technical support and develop plans for system modernization
  • Lead or participate in control system upgrade and installation project teams
  • Continuously improve system and equipment safety, reliability, and productivity

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Bachelor of Science degree from a four-year college or university in electrical, mechanical, or chemical engineering; Electrical preferred
  • Experience with PLC programming, including ladder logic, function diagrams, and structured text
  • Experience with AC and DC drives
  • Experience with control system network interfaces and communications protocols
  • Experience with HMI configuration and programming
  • Experience with distributed control systems (DCS) and continuous process controls, including field instrumentation and valves
  • Experience with control system preventative maintenance, including software backups
  • AutoCAD skills for creating power plans, single lines, control panel layouts, and electrical control diagrams
  • Good oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment with all levels of the organization
  • Specific experience with Rockwell / Allen Bradley, Siemens, Yaskawa, ABB, and Foxboro is a plus
  • Position may be level I–IV based on experience and business needs
