About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Develops fluid systems required for higher-performance, highly manufacturable interplanetary vehicles
- Develops the design, operation, and performance of Starship stage propulsion systems
- Owns overall stage propulsion system performance for each vehicle and mission
- Develops and maintains top-level requirements, system design, operation, and component performance
- Develops and maintains thermal/fluid models
- Generates and maintains control system timing, valve sequencing, stage systems mission design, and CONOPs
- Supports production, test, and launch operations across SpaceX facilities
- Reviews and approves stage system checkouts and non-conformance dispositions
- Performs final vehicle inspections before shipment or test
- Generates and maintains stage test plans and supports stage testing, including on-console operations
- Reviews test data, validates stage system performance, and provides final sign-off on system acceptance
- Reviews and approves launch procedures, integration instructions, anomaly resolutions, and flight software
- Supports major launch operations as directed by the launch director
- Reviews launch data, validates flight vehicle performance, and leads stage-related anomaly resolutions and corrective actions
Requirements
What you’ll need- Bachelor's degree in mechanical, manufacturing, or aerospace engineering
- 1 year of mechanical or fluid system design experience
- Must be willing to work extended hours and weekends as needed
- Physical dexterity required for work in tight quarters
- Ability to stand, kneel, crouch, twist the upper body, work in cramped positions, climb hand over hand
- Ability to work in extreme outdoor environments including heat, cold, and rain
- Ability to work in an environment with fumes, odors, and noise
- Schedule flexibility based on site operational needs
- Flexibility to travel to remote build sites
- Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. lawful permanent resident, refugee, asylee, or eligible to obtain required U.S. Department of State authorizations under ITAR regulations
- Preferred: Master's degree in mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, or another engineering field
- Preferred: Strong understanding of thermodynamics, incompressible flow, and compressible flow
- Preferred: Knowledge of statics and mechanics of materials
- Preferred: Experience with pressurized fluid systems and components
- Preferred: Experience testing rocket stage or engine propulsion systems
- Preferred: Experience with integrated vehicle pad and launch operations
- Preferred: Familiarity with aerospace instrumentation such as pressure transducers and RTDs
- Preferred: Familiarity with basic control systems concepts
- Preferred: Hands-on fabrication, assembly, and/or testing experience
- Preferred: Working knowledge of Python and/or MATLAB
- Preferred: Strong desire to mentor and develop direct reports
