About the role

Key responsibilities & impact

Own the reliability of subscription payments end to end, from purchase and renewal through cancellation, refunds, and entitlements
Build and maintain integrations with Paddle, RevenueCat, and Stripe in Node.js
Lead rollout of new payment providers
Design idempotent webhook handling, provider reconciliation, and safe retries
Implement monitoring, alerting, and runbooks for payment issues
Lead payment incident response and postmortems
Fix payment-system root causes
Set standards for changes to payment code and review billing-related changes
Partner with growth, product, finance, and support on pricing, paywall experiments, and revenue reporting
Mentor engineers and raise backend reliability standards
Establish the architecture, standards, and roadmap for payments at Speak

Requirements

What you’ll need

10+ years of software engineering experience, including staff-level ownership of production systems
Deep experience building and operating recurring subscription billing for a consumer product
Hands-on experience with App Store or Google Play billing, Stripe Billing, or Paddle
Strong backend fundamentals in Node.js and TypeScript or a comparable language
Solid relational database skills
Track record of improving payment-system reliability, reconciliation, and migrations
Ability to define an independent roadmap
Clear communication with engineering, product, and finance partners
Experience contributing to an AI-native development workflow
Ability and willingness to work in person in San Francisco at least 3 days per week
Nice to have: payment-provider migrations or consolidation
Nice to have: international payments, taxes, and currencies, especially across APAC markets
Nice to have: experience with an app used by 1M+ users
Nice to have: entitlement systems shared across mobile and web
