About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Support, coordinate and monitor health program activities at statewide and regional levels
  • Support program development and administration, including Healthy Communities requirements, training, communication, education, recruitment and safety
  • Monitor health program strategy and facilitate local and statewide initiatives
  • Coordinate Special Olympics health programming activities and new health-related initiatives
  • Ensure adherence to health program, Healthy Athletes, fitness programming and Healthy Communities standards and grant deliverables
  • Serve as a knowledgeable authority and program leader on health programming
  • Lead internal and external health-related communications
  • Assist with presentations to partners and volunteers regarding health and Special Olympics initiatives
  • Collaborate with athlete leaders and Health Messengers
  • Support grant writing, fundraising and partnership cultivation
  • Manage grant reporting and required data collection
  • Ensure regional and state compliance with organizational standards, regulations and policies
  • Provide functional team leadership, mentoring and support to Program Specialists, administrative staff, volunteers and program colleagues
  • Maintain relationships with clinical leaders, volunteers, committees, sponsors and related organizations
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college/university in Public or Community Health, Health Sciences, Exercise Sciences, Communications, a related field or equivalent is desired
  • 6 months to 1 year of working in a health or wellness related field with a background in health systems and/or project planning is essential
  • Experience working or volunteering in the field of I/DD as a professional and/or Special Olympics volunteer is preferred
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to communicate effectively with volunteers, professionals and stakeholders from various socio/economic backgrounds
  • Confidence in public speaking situations
  • An understanding of the structure, function and mission of Special Olympics New York, including sports training, competition and program at the local, regional, state and national levels is required
  • Proven performance in administration, project planning, paid and/or volunteer staff leadership, program planning and program evaluation
  • Operating knowledge of the budgeting process, fund-raising and public relations
  • Advanced computer, clerical and organizational skills
  • Experience creating promotional and/or educational resources using programs like Canva
  • A valid driver’s license
