About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Own major Android features end to end, from decisions through release, working closely with Design
  • Own, maintain, and improve reliability metrics for key features
  • Review pull requests and provide developmental feedback
  • Unblock engineers by investigating and resolving difficult issues
  • Standardize successful implementations for team-wide use
  • Maintain tested, clear, consolidated shared components
  • Improve team processes and decide when working methods should change
  • Reduce manual intervention required for correct releases
  • Address recurring problems by changing underlying systems
  • Expand automated verification and shift testing left
  • Run planning focused on unresolved decisions
  • Define review requirements and approval ownership
  • Participate in Product, Design, and Engineering discussions
  • Handle critical issues, own feature releases, and provide nightly builds for QA
  • Support early-career engineers with learning-oriented work and development time

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • 5+ years of software engineering experience, including time leading a team or owning a major surface while staying hands-on
  • Rock solid Kotlin, Kotlin Coroutines, Kotlin Flow, Dagger 2, MVVM, Clean Architecture, Background Services, Music Player Service, Android animations, Jetpack Navigation, and JUnit tests
  • Experience shipping and maintaining background audio or other long-running background work
  • Understanding of the importance of tests and how to approach writing them, including what can't be covered by them
  • Something introduced to a team that remained after implementation ownership ended
  • Comfort asking people to change how they work and handling resulting friction
  • Ability to determine which changes need heavy review
  • Track record of building things used by the wider team
  • Ability to describe how the team works with AI agents
  • Product design intuition, user empathy, and drive to improve Android UI/UX
  • Self-drive to improve the app and codebase beyond the specification
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Links to portfolio and LinkedIn requested in application
  • Bonus: Building, maintaining, or contributing to open source Android projects
  • Bonus: Experience with iOS, Web, or NodeJS
