About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Own major Android features end to end, working closely with the design team through release
- Own, maintain, and improve reliability metrics for key features
- Review pull requests and provide developmental feedback
- Unblock engineers by investigating persistent issues
- Identify reusable implementations and drive team-wide adoption
- Maintain tested, clear, and consolidated shared components
- Lead changes to team processes and ways of working
- Reduce manual intervention required for correct releases
- Address recurring problems by changing underlying systems
- Expand automated verification and shift testing earlier in development
- Run planning focused on unresolved decisions
- Define review requirements and approval points
- Participate in Product, Design, and Engineering discussions
- Handle critical issues, own feature releases, and provide nightly builds to QA
- Support early-career engineers with learning-oriented work and development time
Requirements
What you’ll need- 5+ years of software engineering experience, including time leading a team or owning a major surface while staying hands-on
- Rock solid Kotlin, Kotlin Coroutines, Kotlin Flow, Dagger 2, MVVM, Clean Architecture, Background Services, Music Player Service, Android animations, Jetpack Navigation, and JUnit tests
- Experience shipping and maintaining background audio or other long-running background work
- Understanding of the importance of tests and how to approach writing them, including what can't be covered by them
- Experience introducing a practice or system that remained adopted after implementation
- Comfort asking people to change how they work and managing resulting friction
- Ability to determine which changes need heavy review and which do not, based on system behavior
- Track record of building things used by the broader team
- Ability to describe how the team works with AI agents
- Product design intuition and user empathy
- Self-drive to improve the app and codebase beyond the specification
- Excellent communication skills
- Links to a portfolio and LinkedIn included with application
- Open source Android projects, or experience with iOS, Web, or NodeJS are bonuses, not requirements
