About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Own major features end to end from decision through release, working closely with Design
  • Own, maintain, and improve reliability metrics for key features
  • Review pull requests and provide developmental feedback
  • Unblock team members by investigating impediments directly
  • Identify reusable implementations and consolidate shared components
  • Keep shared code tested, clear, and maintainable
  • Lead changes to team processes and ways of working
  • Reduce manual intervention required for correct releases
  • Address recurring problems by changing underlying systems
  • Shift verification left and expand automated checks before QA
  • Run planning so the team focuses on work requiring decisions
  • Define appropriate review levels and sign-off requirements
  • Participate in Product, Design, and Engineering discussions and communicate team constraints
  • Handle critical issues, own feature releases, and provide nightly builds to QA
  • Support early-career engineers with meaningful work and learning time

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • 5+ years of software engineering experience, including time leading a team or owning a major surface while staying hands-on
  • Rock solid Kotlin, Kotlin Coroutines, Kotlin Flow, Dagger 2, MVVM, Clean Architecture, Background Services, Music Player Service, Android animations, Jetpack Navigation, and JUnit tests
  • Experience shipping and maintaining background audio or other long-running background work
  • Understanding of the importance of tests and how to approach writing them, including what can't be covered by them
  • Experience introducing a team practice or change that persisted after implementation
  • Comfort asking people to change how they work and handling resulting friction
  • Ability to determine which changes need heavy review and which do not
  • Track record of building things used by the wider team
  • Ability to describe how the team works with AI agents
  • Product design intuition, user empathy, and drive to push Android UI/UX beyond specifications
  • Self-drive to improve the app and codebase beyond the specification
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Portfolio and LinkedIn links requested with application
  • Open source Android projects, iOS, Web, or NodeJS experience are bonuses, not requirements
