About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Own major Android core-product features end to end, from decisions through release, collaborating with Design
- Own, maintain, and improve reliability metrics for key features
- Write code, review pull requests, and provide substantive feedback
- Unblock engineers by investigating and resolving difficult issues
- Identify reusable team solutions and consolidate duplicate implementations
- Maintain shared components so they are tested, clear, and reusable
- Improve team processes and engineering practices
- Reduce manual intervention required for correct releases
- Address recurring problems by changing the underlying setup
- Shift verification left by expanding automated checks before QA
- Run planning focused on work requiring decisions
- Define appropriate review levels and sign-off requirements
- Participate in Product, Design, and Engineering discussions and communicate team constraints early
- Handle critical issues, own feature releases, and provide nightly builds for QA
- Support early-career engineers with meaningful work and learning time
Requirements
What you’ll need- 5+ years of software engineering experience, including time leading a team or owning a major surface while staying hands-on
- Rock solid Kotlin, Kotlin Coroutines, Kotlin Flow, Dagger 2, MVVM, Clean Architecture, Background Services, Music Player Service, Android animations, Jetpack Navigation, and JUnit tests
- Experience shipping and maintaining background audio or other long-running background work
- Understanding of the importance of tests and how to approach writing them, including what can't be covered by them
- Experience introducing a lasting team practice or process change
- Comfort asking people to change how they work and handling the resulting friction
- Ability to determine which changes need heavy review and which do not, based on system behavior
- Track record of building things the rest of the team used
- Ability to describe how the team works with AI agents
- Product design intuition, user empathy, and drive to improve Android UI/UX beyond the specification
- Self-drive to improve the app and codebase beyond the specification
- Excellent communication skills
- Portfolio and LinkedIn links requested when applying
- Bonus: building, maintaining, or contributing to open source Android projects
- Bonus: experience with iOS, Web, or NodeJS
