About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Own major Android core product features end to end with the design team, from decision through release
  • Own, maintain, and improve reliability metrics for key features
  • Review pull requests and provide developmental feedback
  • Unblock engineers by investigating difficult issues
  • Identify reusable team solutions and consolidate duplicate implementations
  • Maintain shared components so they are tested, clear, and reusable
  • Drive improvements to team processes
  • Reduce manual intervention required for correct releases
  • Address recurring problems by changing underlying systems
  • Shift verification left and expand automated checks before nightly QA builds
  • Run planning so the team focuses on work requiring decisions
  • Define review requirements and sign-off processes
  • Participate in Product, Design, and Engineering discussions and communicate team constraints
  • Handle critical issues, own feature releases, and provide nightly builds for QA
  • Support early-career team members with meaningful work and learning time

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • 5+ years of software engineering experience, including time leading a team or owning a major surface while staying hands-on
  • Rock solid Kotlin, Kotlin Coroutines, Kotlin Flow, Dagger 2, MVVM, Clean Architecture, Background Services, Music Player Service, Android animations, Jetpack Navigation, and JUnit tests
  • Experience shipping and maintaining background audio or other long-running background work
  • Understanding of the importance of tests and how to approach writing them, including what can't be covered by them
  • Something introduced to a team that remained after the candidate stopped pushing it, with an honest account of its cost
  • Comfort asking people to change how they work and handling resulting friction
  • Ability to determine which changes need heavy review and which do not, based on system behavior
  • Track record of building things the rest of the team used
  • Ability to describe how the team works with AI agents
  • Product design intuition, user empathy, and drive to improve Android UI/UX beyond specifications
  • Self-drive to improve the app and codebase beyond the specification
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Links to a portfolio and LinkedIn included with application
  • Open source Android projects, or experience with iOS, Web, or NodeJS, are bonuses
