About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Own major Android core product features end to end, working closely with Design from decision through release
- Own, maintain, and improve reliability metrics for key features
- Write code, review pull requests, and provide actionable feedback
- Unblock engineers by investigating and resolving technical issues
- Consolidate shared implementations and keep shared components tested and maintainable
- Lead changes to team processes and working practices
- Reduce manual intervention required for correct releases
- Address recurring problems by improving the underlying setup
- Shift verification left and expand automated checks
- Run planning and focus team attention on unresolved decisions
- Define review requirements and sign-off processes
- Participate in Product, Design, and Engineering discussions and represent team constraints
- Handle critical issues, own feature releases, and provide nightly builds for QA
- Support early-career engineers with appropriately challenging work and learning time
Requirements
What you’ll need- 5+ years of software engineering experience, including time leading a team or owning a major surface while staying hands-on
- Rock solid Kotlin, Kotlin Coroutines, Kotlin Flow, Dagger 2, MVVM, Clean Architecture, Background Services, Music Player Service, Android animations, Jetpack Navigation, and JUnit tests
- Experience shipping and maintaining background audio or other long-running background work
- Understanding of the importance of tests and how to approach writing them, including what can't be covered by them
- Something you introduced to a team that stuck after you stopped pushing it, and an honest account of what it cost to get there
- Comfort asking people to change how they work and managing the resulting friction
- Ability to determine which changes need heavy review and which do not
- Track record of building things the rest of the team actually used
- Ability to describe how the team works with AI agents
- Product design intuition, user empathy, and drive to push Android UI/UX further than the spec asks for
- Self-drive to improve the app and codebase beyond the specification
- Excellent communication skills
- Links to portfolio and LinkedIn requested
- Open source Android projects, iOS, Web, or NodeJS experience listed as bonus
