About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Own major Android core product features end to end, from decisions through release, collaborating closely with Design
  • Write and review code while owning features hands-on
  • Own, maintain, and improve reliability metrics for key features
  • Review pull requests and provide constructive technical feedback

  • Address recurring problems by changing underlying systems
  • Shift verification left by expanding automated checks
  • Run planning focused on work requiring decisions
  • Define appropriate review levels and sign-off requirements
  • Participate in Product, Design, and Engineering discussions, bringing team constraints early
  • Handle critical issues and own feature releases
  • Provide nightly builds to the QA team
  • Support early-career engineers with meaningful work and learning time
  • Work with a flat, distributed organization building text-to-speech products used by over 50 million people

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • 5+ years of software engineering experience, including time leading a team or owning a major surface while staying hands-on
  • Rock solid Kotlin, Kotlin Coroutines, Kotlin Flow, Dagger 2, MVVM, Clean Architecture, Background Services, Music Player Service, Android animations, Jetpack Navigation, and JUnit tests
  • Experience shipping and maintaining background audio or other long-running background work
  • Understanding of the importance of tests and how to approach writing them, including what can't be covered by them
  • Something introduced to a team that remained after the candidate stopped pushing it, with an honest account of its implementation cost
  • Comfort asking people to change how they work and managing resulting friction
  • Ability to determine which changes need heavy review based on system behavior
  • Track record of building things the rest of the team used
  • Ability to describe how the team works with AI agents
  • Product design intuition, user empathy, and drive to improve Android UI/UX beyond specifications
  • Self-drive to improve the app and codebase beyond the specification
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Bonus: Building, maintaining, or contributing to open source Android projects
  • Bonus: Experience with iOS, Web, or NodeJS
