About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Own major features end to end with the design team, from decision through release
- Own, maintain, and improve reliability metrics for key features
- Write code, review pull requests, and provide instructive feedback
- Unblock engineers and investigate prolonged technical issues
- Identify reusable team solutions and consolidate duplicate implementations
- Keep shared components tested, clear, maintained, and consolidated
- Initiate improvements to team processes
- Reduce manual intervention required for correct releases
- Address recurring problems by changing underlying systems
- Shift verification left by expanding automated checks
- Run planning and focus team attention on unresolved decisions
- Define appropriate review levels and required sign-offs
- Participate in Product, Design, and Engineering discussions and raise team constraints early
- Handle critical issues, own feature releases, and provide nightly builds to QA
- Support early-career engineers with learning-focused work and development time
Requirements
What you’ll need- 5+ years of software engineering experience, including time leading a team or owning a major surface while staying hands-on
- Rock solid Kotlin, Kotlin Coroutines, Kotlin Flow, Dagger 2, MVVM, Clean Architecture, Background Services, Music Player Service, Android animations, Jetpack Navigation, and JUnit tests
- Experience shipping and maintaining background audio or other long-running background work
- Understanding of the importance of tests and how to approach writing them, including what can't be covered by them
- Something introduced to a team that remained after the candidate stopped pushing it, with an honest account of its implementation cost
- Comfort asking people to change how they work and handling resulting friction
- Ability to determine which changes need heavy review and which do not, based on system behavior
- Track record of building things the rest of the team actually used
- Ability to describe how the team works with AI agents
- Product design intuition, user empathy, and drive to push Android UI/UX beyond the specification
- Self-drive to improve the app and codebase beyond the specification
- Excellent communication skills
- Portfolio and LinkedIn links included with application
- Open source Android experience is a bonus
- Experience with iOS, Web, or NodeJS is a bonus
