About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Own major features end to end with the design team, from decisions through release
- Own, maintain, and improve reliability metrics for key features
- Write code, review code, and own features hands-on
- Review pull requests and provide developmental feedback
- Unblock engineers and investigate stalled work
- Identify reusable team solutions and consolidate duplicated implementations
- Maintain shared components so they are tested, clear, and reusable
- Improve team processes and reduce manual intervention in releases
- Change underlying systems to prevent recurring problems
- Shift verification left through automated checks
- Run planning focused on unresolved decisions
- Define review requirements and sign-off responsibilities
- Participate in Product, Design, and Engineering discussions and bring team constraints early
- Handle critical issues, own feature releases, and provide nightly builds to QA
- Support early-career engineers with meaningful work and learning time
Requirements
What you’ll need- 5+ years of software engineering experience, including time leading a team or owning a major surface while staying hands-on
- Rock solid Kotlin, Kotlin Coroutines, Kotlin Flow, Dagger 2, MVVM, Clean Architecture, Background Services, Music Player Service, Android animations, Jetpack Navigation, and JUnit tests
- Experience shipping and maintaining background audio or other long-running background work
- Understanding of the importance of tests and how to approach writing them, including what can't be covered by them
- Something introduced to a team that remained after the candidate stopped pushing it, with an honest account of its cost
- Comfort asking people to change how they work and handling resulting friction
- Ability to determine which changes need heavy review and which do not, based on system behavior
- Track record of building things the team actually used
- Ability to describe how the team works with AI agents
- Product design intuition, user empathy, and drive to improve Android UI/UX beyond the specification
- Self-drive to improve the app and codebase beyond the specification
- Excellent communication skills
- Bonus: building, maintaining, or contributing to open source Android projects
- Bonus: experience with iOS, Web, or NodeJS
