About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Select and reject manuscripts for publication within current editorial policy
  • Cover for absent colleagues or gaps in special knowledge within the editorial team
  • Build Nature Biomedical Engineering’s reputation by fostering relationships with researchers
  • Take responsibility for developing a broad subject area where agreed
  • Define topics for Perspective and Review Articles, assess author proposals, handle resulting manuscripts, and improve them through effective editing
  • Support colleagues in manuscript handling and participate in team training and development
  • Participate in publishing strategy planning and, where agreed, lead journal input into technological and operational developments
  • Develop productive relationships with Nature journal editors, editorial assistants, Author Services, and other departments
  • Coordinate with commercial colleagues and advise marketing and advertising departments on sponsored projects

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • A PhD (or equivalent) in biomedical engineering or related discipline
  • A passion for science and a thirst to learn more
  • Broad interest in scientific research, both within and beyond your specialty
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and fluency in English (written and spoken)
  • Ability to read and assess the novelty, context and implications of research submitted to the journal from different areas of this discipline
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced collaborative environment
  • Postdoctoral experience preferred but not required
  • Experience in biomedical imaging or genome editing would be a bonus
  • Editorial experience is not required, although significant editorial experience is encouraged for Senior Editor positions
  • CV, brief cover letter, and a Research Highlight of no more than 300 words required for application
