About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Supervise and instruct offenders in food preparation, serving, and cleanup according to established menus and schedules
  • Inspect food items and supplies for quality and quantity and report shortages or discrepancies
  • Complete production records, temperature logs, inventory reports, and other required documentation
  • Coordinate timely meal service and distribution to designated housing units
  • Assist with ordering, receiving, and storing food and supplies according to inventory control procedures
  • Maintain security and sanitation standards in a secure correctional environment
  • Complete required Basic Correctional Food Service Officer Training

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Meet Criminal Justice Standards requirements (12 NCAC 09G .0302)
  • Pass a criminal background check
  • Produce a negative drug screening result
  • Successfully complete medical and psychological evaluations
  • Possess a valid driver’s license
  • High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma
  • One year of experience in institutional food preparation and food services, management of commercial food service operations, or as a Correctional Officer for Trainee and Level I
  • Two years of the specified experience for Level II
  • Three years of the specified experience for Level III
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience may qualify
  • Complete six weeks of Basic Correctional Food Service Officer Training (BCOT), including a required overnight weekday stay
  • Education must be from appropriately accredited institutions
  • Ability to work rotating, fixed, or split shifts, including days, nights, weekends, holidays, and mandatory overtime
  • Applicants must complete the State application in full, including education history, work experience, and applicable certificates and licenses
