About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Conduct inspections related to the manufacture, transport, storage, and sale of food
  • Enforce food safety and labeling laws and regulations
  • Ensure food manufacturing, storage, and transportation facilities are adequate for a safe, sanitary food supply
  • Verify proper food label statements and consumer identification
  • Travel overnight throughout North Carolina as needed, especially during initial training
  • Perform occasional after-hours work during emergencies
  • Potentially perform contract work with the Food & Drug Administration after commissioning

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Bachelor’s degree with a major in biology, food science, home economics or a related field from an appropriately accredited institution and three years of food regulatory experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Must possess or be able to obtain within 30 days of hire, a valid North Carolina driver license
  • General knowledge of State and federal laws and regulations pertaining to the manufacture, storage, distribution, and sale of foods
  • General knowledge of techniques and equipment used in food production, processing, storing, and sale, and principles of food sanitation
  • Good oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds
  • Must reside within a territory county, reside in North Carolina within 20 miles or 30 minutes of a territory county, or relocate at own expense to a territory county within four months of employment
  • Selected applicant may undergo a background check to be commissioned as an Officer with the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services for FDA contract work
