About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Enforce Marine Fisheries Commission rules and regulations
  • Patrol assigned coastal land and water areas in response to complaints, calls for service, and suspected violations
  • Inspect fish houses, seafood dealers, fishermen, boats, fishing operations, licenses, catches, and legal gear
  • Communicate statutes and regulations governing size limits, fishing seasons, and closed waters to the public
  • Operate small boats or assist with operating large boats in North Carolina coastal waters
  • Apprehend and cite violators of Marine Fisheries laws and rules
  • Investigate violations and complaints, assess cases, collect and preserve evidence, and follow chain of custody
  • Testify in court proceedings
  • Maintain assigned equipment in high operational readiness and perform general maintenance
  • Simultaneously carry out patrol officer, inspector, and/or investigator responsibilities as needed

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma
  • Must complete all requirements for an NC Probationary Law Enforcement Certification, including Basic Law Enforcement Training, within one year of employment
  • Must be at least 20 years of age
  • Possession of a valid driver's license
  • Must reside in the area assigned to patrol
  • Ability to patrol coastal land and water areas and operate small boats or assist with large boats
  • Ability to inspect vessels, fishing operations, fish houses, seafood dealers, and fishermen for compliance with laws and regulations
  • Ability to apprehend and cite violators, investigate complaints and violations, preserve evidence, maintain chain of custody, and testify in court
