About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Operate standard hand tools, power equipment, vehicles, and heavy equipment for preventive maintenance, repair, and construction of roads and roadside features
- Inspect work and ensure work-zone safety
- Participate in snow and ice removal
- Flag and assist with maintenance and repair project completion
- Operate tractors with attachments, curb machines, cutoff saws, dump trucks, rollers, pulverizer mixers, and other road-maintenance equipment
- Assist paint crews with roadway painting and operate paint-removal and thermoplastic equipment
- Erect, install, and replace road signs
- Assist Electronics Technicians with signal maintenance and installation
- Perform vegetation control and debris removal
- Operate tractors, mowers, dump trucks, flatbed trucks, brooms, trenchers, and edge-line paint guns
- Assist with grass and wildflower installation and maintenance
- Assist with carpentry, welding, steel fabrication, or concrete work
- Work during snow, ice, tornadoes, hurricanes, and other adverse weather conditions
Requirements
What you’ll need- High school education, General Educational Development Diploma, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
- Current Commercial Driver’s License at hire, or ability to obtain a North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License through on-the-job training and all required federal regulations within 360 days of hire
- Ability to legally operate CDL-required equipment and trucks with manual and automatic transmissions at hire or within 360 days of hire
- Valid, current North Carolina driver’s license appropriate for the vehicle operated, or a valid appropriate license from an adjacent state for employees permanently residing there
- No more than two moving-violation convictions within the past three years
- No alcohol- or drug-related traffic offense convictions within the past five years
- Applicants with current or recent out-of-state licenses must provide driving records from the relevant states
- Successful completion of pre-employment drug testing
- Signed release and background statement permitting checks with previous employers for the past three years regarding controlled-substance and alcohol testing
- Successful completion of NCDOT post-offer employment evaluation
- Experience operating power tools and/or small hand tools preferred by management
- Experience performing manual labor preferred by management
- Ability to work extended hours, weekends, and holidays during adverse weather and operational needs
- Ability to work outdoors in extreme environmental conditions and around highway construction hazards
- Safety toe footwear required
