About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Plan, coordinate, and direct activities related to construction, renovation, maintenance, and repair of state-owned or state-leased buildings, facilities, grounds, and equipment
  • Manage and supervise construction/maintenance technicians, licensed trades specialists, contracted crews, workers, and other personnel
  • Conduct inspections and determine maintenance, construction, and renovation requirements
  • Estimate labor and material costs
  • Inspect work in progress and completed work for code compliance
  • Develop and implement budgets, policies, and procedures
  • Ensure compliance with laws, rules, and regulations
  • Prepare routine and special reports
  • Evaluate project bids
  • Prepare specifications for equipment, supplies, and vehicles
  • Prepare cost estimates for future capital improvement projects
  • Review plans and construction documents
  • Plan, supervise, and direct movement and operation of heavy construction equipment throughout the state
  • Schedule work crews and report or confirm crew time and attendance
  • Perform work as needed
  • Complete reports on equipment operations, installation and maintenance work, and materials, supplies, and equipment used

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Five years of experience in skilled building trade or maintenance work involving construction, maintenance, alteration and/or repair of buildings, grounds and utilities
  • Two years of supervising contractors in one of the listed fields
  • Alternatively, an equivalent combination of education and experience, substituting one year of college or technical school training in building or construction trades for each year of required non-supervisory experience
  • Knowledge of building trades
  • Knowledge of state contracting and purchasing laws and rules
  • Knowledge of construction, maintenance, and repair of buildings, grounds, or utility systems
  • Knowledge of building codes
  • Ability to analyze maintenance needs
  • Ability to set priorities for crews of workers
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships
  • Willingness and ability to perform all job-related travel normally associated with the position
