About the role

Key responsibilities & impact

Lead engineering on a multi-year programme modernizing and migrating middle-office applications to AWS
Design and write production code for cloud-native services and user interfaces
Build ReactJS front ends replacing legacy desktop and GWT/PowerBuilder UIs
Build Java/Spring Boot microservices and REST/Kafka/IBM MQ APIs with Oracle persistence on ECS/EKS
Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure-as-code, containerization, secrets management and observability
Create reference implementations, templates and starter projects for the team and AI agents
Conduct daily code reviews, pair with engineers and debug production issues
Lead the modernization engineering team and set architecture, code quality, testing and release standards
Own technical delivery plans, estimates and release quality with Architecture, Platform, Data, QE and application support teams
Lead engineering for cutover, parallel runs and handover to run teams
Use AI tools and agents to accelerate discovery, code conversion, testing and deployment
Build agent workflows, prompt libraries and codebase knowledge context
Apply AI to reverse-engineer legacy code, generate specifications, convert code and generate tests
Track and report AI productivity and quality metrics
Implement human review checkpoints, audit trails and secure-coding gates for AI-generated code
Ensure AI-extracted business logic is reviewed by subject-matter experts and reconciled before go-live
Hire, coach and grow a permanent full-stack engineering team
Build AI fluency across the team and manage vendor and temporary capacity
Ensure knowledge transfer to permanent staff

Requirements

What you’ll need

16+ years in software engineering, still actively coding
5+ years leading engineering teams on modernization or cloud migration programmes
Expert in Java 17+, Spring Boot, JPA, REST API design, Kafka/IBM MQ messaging and performance tuning
Strong experience with modern React, hooks, TypeScript, Redux or similar, component design, Jest/React Testing Library, and data-heavy enterprise UIs
Practical experience with CI/CD, Harness, Jenkins or GitHub Actions, Terraform, Docker, Kubernetes/ECS/EKS, Git workflows, automated testing and quality gates
AWS experience covering compute, networking, IAM, managed services, HA/DR
Strong SQL; experience with Oracle and migrating from Sybase or SQL Server
Proven hands-on use of AI coding assistants and agents in delivery, with measurable results
Comfortable reading and reverse-engineering COBOL, C/C++, and PowerBuilder
Experience delivering in a regulated financial services environment
Knowledge of investment servicing or middle-office areas preferred
Experience building MCP servers, knowledge graphs or retrieval-augmented context for engineering agents preferred
AWS Professional-level or equivalent certification preferred
