About the role

Key responsibilities & impact

Lead engineering on a multi-year programme to modernize and migrate middle-office applications to AWS
Design and write production code for cloud-native services and user interfaces, especially complex or high-risk components
Build Java/Spring Boot microservices and REST/Kafka/MQ APIs with Oracle persistence on ECS/EKS
Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure-as-code, containerization, secrets management and observability
Perform daily code reviews, pair with engineers and debug production-grade issues
Lead the modernization engineering team and establish standards for architecture, code quality, testing and release
Own technical delivery plans, estimates and release quality with Architecture, Platform, Data, QE and application support teams
Lead engineering for cutover, parallel runs and handover to run teams
Set up and run an AI-augmented delivery model using AI agents and assistants for discovery, code conversion, testing and deployment
Build agent workflows, prompt libraries and codebase knowledge context using knowledge graphs, vector databases and MCP integrations
Apply AI to reverse-engineer legacy code, generate specifications, convert code and generate tests
Track AI productivity and quality metrics and report outcomes to leadership
Implement human review checkpoints, audit trails and secure-coding gates for AI-generated code
Ensure AI-extracted business logic is checked by subject-matter experts and reconciled before go-live
Hire, coach and grow a permanent full-stack engineering team and build AI fluency
Manage vendor and temporary capacity and ensure knowledge transfer to permanent staff
Deliver production code and reference implementations across front end, back end and pipelines
Deliver modernization releases to plan with no material production incidents at cutover
Establish a permanent full-stack team able to run and evolve the new platform

Requirements

What you’ll need

15+ years in software engineering and still actively coding
5+ years leading engineering teams on modernization or cloud migration programmes
Expert knowledge of Java 17+, Spring Boot, JPA, REST API design, Kafka/IBM MQ messaging and performance tuning
Practical experience with CI/CD (Harness, Jenkins or GitHub Actions), Terraform, Docker, Kubernetes/ECS/EKS, Git workflows, automated testing and quality gates
AWS experience with compute, networking, IAM and managed services, and designing for HA/DR
Strong SQL; experience with Oracle and migrating from Sybase or SQL Server
Proven hands-on use of AI coding assistants and agents in delivery, with measurable results
Comfort reading and reverse-engineering legacy code (COBOL, C/C++, PowerBuilder)
Experience delivering in a regulated financial services environment
Some knowledge of ReactJS/Typescript
Knowledge of investment servicing or middle-office areas: trade capture, confirmation, settlement, collateral, reconciliation, investment accounting
Experience building MCP servers, knowledge graphs or retrieval-augmented context for engineering agents
AWS Professional-level or equivalent certification
Ability to make decisions and work comfortably with ambiguity
Ability to write code, review pull requests and present to senior stakeholders
