About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Own day-to-day execution of original research projects, from framing research questions through delivering final results
  • Investigate and synthesize relevant research literature and policy context
  • Make methodologically sound decisions about data cleaning, variable operationalization, sampling, units of analysis, and analytic approaches
  • Clean, code, organize, merge, and manage complex longitudinal datasets using Stata or R, with Stata preferred
  • Perform data quality assurance checks and identify potential data problems and their causes
  • Write carefully commented and well-organized syntax
  • Design and refine methodologies to meet project objectives
  • Conduct advanced statistical analyses
  • Document methodological and operational decisions and prepare data codebooks
  • Collaborate with internal and external partners to execute research
  • Guide supporting research staff and contractors, assign tasks, set timelines, assess work quality, and provide feedback
  • Collaborate on research manuscripts, reports, briefs, literature reviews, and summaries
  • Prepare slide decks, data tables, figures, infographics, and other research communications
  • Review internal partner products for accuracy and effective communication
  • Deliver presentations to internal and external audiences
  • Represent Strada at panels, conferences, symposia, and other convenings
  • Help identify and develop research topics and questions aligned with the Institute's mission
  • Build partnerships advancing research priorities
  • Collaborate on grant proposals
  • Support an inclusive workplace culture and participate in the diversity, equity, and inclusion learning agenda

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • A PhD (in hand by start date) in public policy, economics, sociology, demography, higher education, or a related field
  • Extensive experience with advanced quantitative research methods, including multiple quasi-experimental designs
  • Extensive experience preparing complex longitudinal datasets for analysis, including cleaning, coding, organizing, merging, and managing data
  • Extensive experience analyzing data and displaying results in tabular and graphical form
  • A minimum of five years of aggregated hands-on research experience
  • Experience writing manuscripts for peer-reviewed scholarly journals
  • Experience translating complex research findings into reports, briefs, and/or presentations for scholarly audiences and policymakers
  • Experience leading research projects
  • In-depth knowledge of one or more areas related to higher education, workforce development, and/or labor market outcomes
  • Ability to synthesize and communicate complex research findings
  • Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously while maintaining exceptional attention to detail
  • Ability to work independently and meet deadlines
  • Ability to work well with others, including receiving direction and providing direction
  • Exceptionally strong writing, verbal communication, and editing skills
