About the role

Key responsibilities & impact

Partner with the Head of Strategic FP&A to build a lean AI-native strategic finance and FP&A function
Provide cross-functional colleagues with analytical frameworks for departmental resource allocation decisions
Determine return on ad spend benchmarks for different paid marketing channels
Set team hiring levels in each market as the company scales internationally
Help drive the annual budget cycle and rolling quarterly re-forecasts
Build driver-based operating budgets and headcount plans with department heads
Establish monthly budget-versus-actuals cadences across the company
Analyze variance drivers and keep teams on track to budget targets
Surface proactive risk-mitigation options when expenses or revenues deviate from plan
Investigate business drivers and contribute to Substack’s multi-year corporate financial model
Translate strategic goals into granular financial roadmaps
Help architect an AI-native FP&A organization using automation and modern data workflows
Accelerate financial modeling, variance reporting, and scenario planning

Requirements

What you’ll need

4–8 years of total experience
Experience typically beginning at an investment bank, investment firm, or consulting firm, followed by strategic finance or FP&A roles at fast-paced technology-enabled companies
Eager to adopt the latest AI tools to automate repetitive work
Foundational understanding of SQL and Python/R
Familiarity with visualization tools like Looker/Power BI
Rigorous training in spreadsheet analysis
Experience with modern FP&A tools such as Adaptive, Aleph, Fintastic, Causal, or Cube is a plus
High self-confidence, low ego, and high hustle
Identification with Substack’s mission
Must be located in the United States, as indicated by the required application question
