About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Identify, recruit, and cultivate relationships with new and returning outside authors through research, professional networking, conferences, LinkedIn, social media, and other outreach channels
  • Assist journal editors-in-chief in expanding and diversifying the contributor base
  • Identify timely tax topics and publication needs with commentary leadership
  • Solicit content from outside authors and maintain an active contributor pipeline for Tax Notes publications
  • Monitor and administer the submissions inbox
  • Respond to internal and external inquiries regarding commentary content
  • Route submissions to editorial staff and communicate with contributors throughout the publication process, including for the Procedurally Taxing blog
  • Prepare, distribute, and track copyright agreements for outside authors
  • Coordinate permissions requests and manage reprint and repost inquiries
  • Maintain accurate records of agreements and permissions
  • Collect, verify, and maintain author biographies, photographs, contact information, contributor mailing lists, and editorial records
  • Provide authors with publication materials following release
  • Support contributor engagement initiatives
  • Coordinate departmental projects including the Student Writing Competition, internal magazine cover contest, and Write for Us and editorial council webpages
  • Maintain AI-assisted submission review tools and improve author management processes
  • Identify opportunities to increase operational efficiency
  • Compile, analyze, and distribute performance reports using Domo, A-Team, and other reporting platforms
  • Track publication performance, contributor activity, and editorial metrics
  • Perform administrative and editorial functions supporting the Commentary department and publication workflows
  • Maintain positive contributor relationships, respond to inquiries, address routine publication issues, collect author feedback, and help ensure an efficient publication experience

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • BA in English, writing, or journalism, or equivalent in experience required
  • 2+ years of related professional experience preferred
  • Experience with database management a plus
  • Superior communication skills
  • Superior organization skills
  • Ability to establish and maintain rapport with outside authors
  • Ability to work well under deadline pressure and adjust to changing priorities
  • Familiarity with style guides and online publishing highly desirable
  • Good computer skills, including a working knowledge of MS Office and Internet searching
  • Knowledge of media analytics
  • Frequently required to sit for prolonged periods, talk and hear; use hands to type, file, handle or feel; reach with arms
  • Visual acuity to use a computer and keyboard, prepare and analyze data and figures, and read extensively
  • Occasionally required to stand, walk and lift up to 20 pounds
  • Ordinary ambulatory skills sufficient to visit other locations
