About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Support TD Insurance lawyers under supervision through litigation processes involving prosecution, defence and resolution of lawsuits
  • Develop and review legal strategies for discovery, investigation, case handling and trial/hearing
  • Communicate legal strategies with TD Insurance Claims Representatives and Insured Clients
  • Prepare draft legal documents, correspondence, pleadings, motions, mediation and pre-trial/arbitration memoranda
  • Perform legal research
  • Attend or summarize discoveries
  • Review Claims records and legal files to respond to discovery demands and obtain undertakings and documentation
  • Update relevant work in the electronic file system and prepare document briefs
  • Attend settlement conferences and assist with settlement under lawyer supervision
  • Assist with investigations, including locating and interviewing witnesses and obtaining trial evidence
  • Assist lawyers with mediation, pre-trial, trial and arbitration preparation
  • Attend court conferences, pre-trial/arbitration hearings and certain motions with a lawyer
  • Assist lawyers at trial or arbitration
  • Respond to Small Claims Court files, negotiate settlements and arrange payment plans where applicable
  • Perform other duties according to court and provincial jurisdictions

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • A law degree with LLB or J.D. from a recognized law school
  • Qualified to commence articling in August 2027 in accordance with the requirements of the Law Society of Ontario, for a period of ten (10) months
  • General knowledge of procedural and substantive law; insurance law is an asset
  • Basic knowledge of court procedures
  • Basic understanding of the operations and requirements of insured clients and insurers
  • Strong oral communication skills and willingness to appear in court
  • Previous court, mock trial, mooting and/or legal clinic experience is an asset
  • Excellent writing skills and ability to draft clear, concise and persuasive legal documents
  • Ability to communicate effectively and professionally with policyholders, counsel, Judges, Masters, court personnel and legal-industry professionals
  • Ability to work productively and efficiently under pressure
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively
  • Superior organizational skills, strong work ethic and ability to multitask
  • Ability to perform complex legal research, writing and analysis
  • Applicants with credentials from an international university must have already received their NCA certificate from the Federation of Law Societies
