About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Provide oversight, legal advice, and support to TD Bank management in Corporate Group Functions and Business Units
- Serve as a legal expert in defined subject matter areas and/or business lines
- Manage an array of civil litigation matters across all businesses of the bank
- Identify, assess, and mitigate legal and regulatory risks involving consumer protection, fraud, and other matters
- Supervise external counsel and manage external counsel budgets and risk reporting
- Advise lines of business on best practices to minimize legal and litigation risk
- Prepare resolutions, contracts, memoranda, litigation documents, and forms
- Participate in major legal actions
- Work with the General Counsel, department attorneys, and external legal counsel on company legal issues
- Manage or evaluate paralegal and administrative staff when applicable
- Provide leadership, coaching, counseling, and guidance to staff
- Assist with departmental budgets and legal spend
- Participate in practice groups, cross-practice teams, special projects, and additional duties as required
Requirements
What you’ll need- Bachelor's degree required
- J.D. from an accredited law school required
- 10+ years of related experience
- In lieu of 10 years, 8 years of experience in a large, matrixed law firm environment is accepted
- Strong knowledge of at least one area of law relating to banking/financial services operations and issues
- Strong negotiation and conflict resolution skills
- Strong legal and analysis skills
- Ability to apply legal knowledge to the business
- Ability to exercise sound judgment
- Strong interpersonal, teamwork, and client skills
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Ability to provide difficult, complex, and unwelcome legal advice credibly and convincingly to management
- Strong technology aptitude, including proficiency with standard office software and ability to learn and apply new technologies
- Ability to understand current and emerging technologies in the industry and their effect on business objectives
- Ability to identify problems and barriers and implement solutions
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and manage multiple deadlines and priorities
- Must comply with applicable Bar Rules and Codes of Professional Responsibility
- Ability to understand the value of knowledge management and build and support related systems and tools
