About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Provide expert-level labor and employment law oversight, legal advice, and support to business lines and stakeholders
- Manage employment litigation matters
- Oversee external counsel and manage legal budgets and expenditures
- Prepare resolutions, contracts, memoranda to management, litigation documents, and forms
- Participate in major legal actions
- Partner with HR and internal stakeholders to identify and mitigate risks and promote employment-law compliance best practices
- Provide legal advice and support to TD Bank management in Corporate Group Functions and Business Units
- Function as a legal expert in defined subject-matter areas and/or business lines
- Manage paralegal and administrative staff as needed, assigning responsibilities and evaluating results
- Provide leadership, coaching, counseling, and guidance to staff
- Work with the General Counsel, department attorneys, and external legal counsel
- Advise business lines on practices that minimize legal and litigation risk
- Assist with departmental budget management
- Anticipate client needs and address complex or ambiguous legal issues
- Identify and prevent future legal risks and opportunities
- Resolve conflicts between business-unit needs and company interests
- Participate in special projects and perform additional duties as required
- Occasional domestic travel
Requirements
What you’ll need- Bachelor's degree required
- J.D. from an Accredited Law School required
- 10+ years of related experience
- Strong knowledge of at least one area of law relating to banking/financial services operations and issues
- Strong negotiation and conflict resolution skills
- Strong legal and analysis skills
- Detail oriented
- Ability to apply legal knowledge to the business
- Ability to exercise sound judgment
- Strong interpersonal skills
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Strong teamwork and client skills
- Highly motivated
- Ability to provide difficult, complex and unwelcome legal advice credibly and convincingly to management
- Strong technology aptitude, including proficiency with standard office software and ability to learn and apply new technologies
- Capacity to understand current and emerging technologies in the industry and their effects on business objectives
- Ability to identify problems and barriers and effectively implement solutions
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and manage multiple deadlines and priorities
- Understanding of knowledge management and ability to build and support systems and tools
- Compliance with applicable Bar Rules, Codes of Professional Responsibility, and corporate ethical and behavioral standards
- Experience within the financial industry or broker dealer environment preferred
