About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Develop and sustain advanced services for a Kubernetes-based Platform as a Service
  • Manage production Kubernetes in on-premises and cloud environments, including deployment, upgrades, patching, performance tuning, capacity planning, and backups/disaster recovery
  • Perform frequent full security patching across all Kubernetes infrastructure layers while maintaining high uptime
  • Own and engineer production AWS and Kubernetes services
  • Identify and resolve full-stack Kubernetes engineering problems independently
  • Ensure real-time telemetry analysis for space launch partners including SpaceX, United Launch Alliance, and Blue Origin
  • Provide after-hours Kubernetes infrastructure troubleshooting during launch events
  • Support scientists and engineers running applications in Kubernetes
  • Provide Linux expertise and troubleshooting
  • Evaluate and test new products and technologies
  • Use code to enhance and automate operations
  • Collaborate with a multidisciplinary platform and infrastructure team supporting national space assets

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Bachelor’s degree in STEM, Computer Science, or another related science/engineering discipline
  • 8 or more years of relevant experience developing and delivering complex large-scale distributed software systems solutions and technical products
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience supporting highly available enterprise environments, including maintaining system uptime and service availability targets
  • At least 2 years of hands-on experience managing existing Kubernetes environments, including deployment, upgrade, patching, and backups
  • Full ownership and engineering responsibility of production Kubernetes services on-premises and in cloud service providers such as AWS and Azure
  • Ability to identify and resolve engineering problems independently
  • Experience in Linux systems administration and configuration for an enterprise environment
  • Strong understanding of networking and storage fundamentals
  • Experience automating repetitive tasks with scripting or DevOps tools
  • Ability to obtain a TS/SCI security clearance and polygraph
  • U.S. citizenship required to obtain a security clearance
  • Senior Engineering Specialist: 12 or more years of relevant experience; 8 years supporting a highly available enterprise environment; experience architecting and deploying secure cloud and/or Kubernetes environments from scratch; experience with performance tuning and capacity planning
  • Preferred/standout: current and active U.S. Government TS/SCI security clearance and polygraph; CKA, RHCSA, or RHCE; Rancher; persistent container storage; Linux performance tuning and security hardening; VMware or Harvester; automated provisioning, configuration management, Infrastructure-as-Code, GitOps, ArgoCD, Ansible, Terraform, Puppet, Packer, Bash, Golang, Python; Agile and Scrum
