About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Attend daily meetings with Daily Desk editors
  • Edit stories filed by different sports verticals, asking questions of reporters and vertical editors as necessary
  • Generate story ideas based on the news during the reporting portion
  • Work writing shifts focused on breaking news and react quickly when news happens, as both a reporter and editor
  • Gain experience in editing and reporting/writing through six-week rotations
  • Connect with editors and reporters beyond the Daily Desk
  • Get involved in coverage of all sports and establish relationships throughout The Athletic
  • Work nights and weekends as expected

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Undergraduate students, ideally in their junior or senior year; all undergraduates and postgraduates are encouraged to apply
  • Ability to work a 30 to 40 hour work week
  • Previous newsroom internship experience is a plus
  • Ability to adapt to fast-paced work environments where needs and priorities can change quickly
  • Deep knowledge of and passion for sports
  • Remote internship requiring some travel to New York City
  • Candidates based in New York City have the option of working on-site in the New York office
  • Resume
  • 500 to 700-word essay explaining why you should be considered, including main area of interest in Editing/Writing
  • Two letters of recommendation
  • Portfolio of at least 5 relevant samples showcasing strong Editing/Writing skills
