About the role

Key responsibilities & impact

Oversee and expand Dispatches, the opening section of the print magazine
Generate ideas for arguments, columns, and regular features
Edit and top-edit articles for the front of the book
Ensure the section has depth, integrity, variety, wit, and style
Assign and edit stories for Dispatches
Work closely with staff writers and freelancers and expand the contributor network
Help ensure coverage is compelling, thoughtful, original, and ambitious
Shepherd pieces through copyedit and fact-checking
Work with teams across the newsroom to enhance story presentation and distribution

Requirements

What you’ll need

Significant experience assigning and editing articles across disciplines and in styles including opinion, reporting, humor, and argued essays
Editorial imagination and intellect; an eye for original ideas
Large and varied network of writers, scholars, and other potential contributors
Record of publishing writers of diverse backgrounds
Ability to guide writers and fellow editors to do their best work
A knack for display copy and other elements of magazine packaging and web publishing
Employees must be vaccinated against COVID-19, including subsequent boosters, and submit proof of vaccination status
Successful completion of reference checks
