About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Identify, capture, maintain, and protect JAX intellectual property rights.
- Build and streamline IP processes to drive efficiencies.
- Help researchers navigate complex intellectual property landscapes and develop strategies to secure and enforce IP rights.
- Partner with research teams and cross-functionally to provide strategic, proactive, and practical guidance regarding IP opportunities, strategies, and risk.
- Support day-to-day IP needs across JAX Mouse Clinical Research Services across varied scientific disciplines.
- Advise and actively manage patent strategy, drafting, prosecution, and maintenance, directly and with outside counsel.
- Support portfolio review sessions and occasionally prune the portfolio to align with organizational initiatives.
- Review invention disclosures and patent landscape searches.
- Collaborate with inventors on technical details, drawings, and experimental data for patent protection.
- Translate IP needs into actionable feedback for product and business development teams.
- Conduct patent searches for prior art, patentability, clearance, and freedom-to-operate analyses.
- Provide Sponsored Research Administration with patent filing data for reports, renewal applications, award closeouts, and final invention statements in iEdison under the Bayh-Dole Act.
- Report federally funded research inventions and patents to funding agencies via iEdison.
- Support IP enforcement initiatives and organizational compliance programs.
- Provide educational presentations and IP training to JAX employees.
- Report to the Chief IP Counsel.
Requirements
What you’ll need- Registered to practice before the USPTO.
- At least 3 years of experience as a patent agent, in-house or at an IP law firm, supporting global IP matters related to prosecution in life science and/or data science fields.
- Preferred: MS or PhD in life and/or data science.
- Considered: BS in life sciences or a comparable life data science field, with at least 4 years applicable prior research and/or product development experience.
- Strong client interface, collaboration, and strategic portfolio consulting skills.
- Ability to apply scientific expertise together with commercial and legal considerations.
- Excellent communication skills and comfort conducting oral presentations.
- Ability to work independently.
- Intellectual curiosity.
- Strong attention to detail, organizational, writing, and project management skills.
- Familiarity with stage-gate and product development processes.
