About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Support LASROC attorneys in the Housing & Consumer Law Unit and assist the Tenant Defense Project
  • Assist with eviction prevention, bankruptcy, foreclosure prevention, and other housing and consumer law matters
  • Assist attorneys at least twice a week at Rochester City Court Landlord Tenant Part intake sessions
  • Help tenants sign up for services, complete intake packets, access outside funding sources, and work with attorneys on legal information and case settlements
  • Maintain ongoing client contact by telephone and email for case updates and management
  • Update client appearance notes and court records in databases and help identify outside funding sources
  • Call bankruptcy clients for application information and enter data into Next Chapter bankruptcy software
  • Prepare transfer tax paperwork for deed transfers
  • Work with lawyers to prepare documents for real estate closings
  • Archive and organize live case materials, track adjournments, and prepare attorneys for appearances
  • Execute landlord-tenant assignments through the Tenant Defense Project interagency case referral system
  • Conduct intake and issue spotting for illegal lockout, constructive eviction, and consumer debt matters
  • Perform copying, filing, scheduling, and other administrative tasks
  • Accompany contingents to outlying area courts for intake staffing or one-off cases
  • Perform additional duties as assigned

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Associates degree in Paralegal Studies or High School Diploma with equivalent experience
  • Notary Public License (If not currently licensed, must be able to pass the notary exam)
  • Strong attention to detail and organization
  • Ability to prioritize and multi-task
  • High level of proficiency with Microsoft Office
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Team player with a positive and cooperative work attitude
  • Ability to communicate effectively with associates, supervisors, and external stakeholders in person, over the phone, or via email
  • Ability to sit for extended periods at a desk or workstation
  • Regular use of computers and other office equipment
  • Ability to occasionally lift and/or move up to 20 pounds
  • Occasional travel may be required for training sessions, conferences, or related events
