About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Gather factual evidence to evaluate fitness-to-practise concerns after initial screening
  • Ensure cases are investigated proportionately and promptly to protect the public in line with NMC statutory obligations
  • Advise case holders on case direction, scoping, evidential considerations, risk management, and procedural issues
  • Provide advice from investigation planning through review of completed investigation reports and evidence
  • Provide direction on some cases and no advice on others as new working methods are tested
  • Conduct witness interviews
  • Engage with registrants, their representatives, and other external parties
  • Provide oversight and support for High Court applications to extend interim orders
  • Support High Court and Family Court applications seeking disclosure orders
  • Motivate and coach junior staff
  • Collaborate with other teams and work directly on cases

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Current UK practising certificate
  • Evidence of providing legal advice in a high-pressure environment
  • Considerable post-qualification experience dealing with complex cases
  • Ability to make sensible, pragmatic decisions while considering both the big picture and detail
  • Evidence of commitment to motivating and coaching junior staff
  • Excellent written, oral, and presentation skills
  • Focused approach to delivering results under tight deadlines
  • Self-motivated, takes initiative, and strives to improve work quality
  • Experience of collaborative working with other teams
  • Experience working in a politically sensitive environment and handling high-profile sensitive issues
  • Willingness to work on cases as well as advise on them
  • Ability to commit to working in an NMC office two days per week
  • Subject to pre-employment checks; DBS and further vetting checks may apply in future
